Ms. Betsy Donat, Esq. Chief Compliance Officer & General Counsel

Ms. Betsy Donat received her Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and was awarded her Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University with a focus on Health Law. She is licensed to practice law in the state of Colorado, District of Colorado and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. Donat is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, Health Care Compliance Association and the Colorado Bar Association. She has been active in health law and the compliance field for many years. Prior to joining Forensic Laboratories, Ms. Donat was Compliance Counsel for the Fortune 500 company, DaVita Inc., during which time she provided regulatory guidance and assisted in successfully completing a Corporate Integrity Agreement with the Office of Inspector General. She is always available to answer any questions regarding compliance concerns and can provide additional information on Forensic Laboratories’ Privacy Policy upon request.

Dr. Laura K. Bechtel, PhD, DABCC, Laboratory Director

Dr. Bechtel received her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Utah, and completed her Laboratory Medicine Fellowship at the University of Virginia.  She was awarded her Diplomat status from the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Prior to joining Forensic Laboratories Dr. Bechtel established and directed the Clinical Pharmacology Mass Spectrometry Laboratory-Clinical Chemistry Division at Memorial Sloan Kettering. Her experience in Clinical Toxicology stems from her Lab Medicine fellowship and Assistant Professor appointment in the Medical Toxicology Division – Emergency Medicine Department at the University of Virginia. There she provided lab medicine knowledge and research support for clinical cases and projects involving the international, national and state institutions.  Dr. Bechtel’s specialties include assay development and validation, clinical toxicology, pharmacokinetic analyses, pharmacogenomics, cellular signaling, lab management, quality compliance and guidance on CLIA and State regulations.  She is available to answer technical and clinical questions regarding her fields of expertise.

Mr. Dwain Irvan, C(ASCP)CM , Director of Operations

Mr. Dwain Irvan received a B.S. in Biology from Murray State University, Murray, KY and attended Methodist Hospital School of Medical Technology in Memphis, TN. Mr. Irvan is certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) in Chemistry and as a Medical Technologist Supervisor by the State of Tennessee. Mr. Irvan has over 20 years of professional experience in technical management for companies such as Corning Clinical Laboratory, Aegis Science Corporation and LabOne (formerly Northwest Toxicology). His specialty is method development, validation and implementation of high complexity analytical methods and includes hair and oral fluid analysis, steroid, medical examiner, medical professional and pain management profiles.

Mr. Ryan Brough, Senior Laboratory Manager

Ryan Brough joined Forensic Laboratories after working at Tandem Labs, a leading bioanalytical CRO, where he developed quantitative LC/MS/MS methods in a GLP environment, and was responsible for all discovery level projects at the Salt Lake City facility. Mr. Brough previously worked at Quest Diagnostics (formerly Northwest Toxicology, a division of LabOne), a full service toxicology laboratory. Mr. Brough was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Science from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Mr. Brough has directed the Confirmation Laboratory for three years, and has specialized in method development, method validation, process optimization, quality assurance improvements and evaluations of new technologies.

Mr. Robert Osman, National Sales Operations Director

Our National Sales Operations Director, Mr. Robert Osman has a Bachelor of Science in business from the University of Denver. Mr. Osman has 30 years of business experience in managing and running small to medium companies.  Mr. Osman owned his own industrial distribution business that he grew to four locations throughout the Rocky Mountain West.  More recently as Vice President of sales at a nationally known internet company Mr. Osman grew sales to become the largest vendor in the sector.  Mr. Osman also holds a patent on a device in the sporting goods industry.

Mr. Mike Sternenberger, Facility Manager

Mike Sternenberger joined Forensic Laboratories after working for ten years at NetQuote Inc. as their Office Manager. While there Mike managed building operations as well as numerous facility expansions for the fast growing internet company. Mike brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience that will support the explosive growth projected for Forensic Laboratories.

Ms. Linda Bauer-Shaddock, MA, PHR, Human Resource Manager

As our new Human Resource Manager, Linda brings 9 years of extensive human resource experience to Forensic Laboratories. Her past experiences come from a diverse background working with a Professional Employer’s Organization (PEO), internet broadcast email company, legal consulting firm, telecom and independent consulting. Ms. Bauer-Shaddock received her Bachelor’s degree in Technical Management from Regis University, her MA in Counseling from Colorado Christian University and has taken course work on her MBA from University of Phoenix. Ms. Bauer- Shaddock’s expertise is employee relations, employee development and training. Her passion is to develop employees to the height of their potential while focusing on a workforce that works collaboratively toward the success of the organization. Ms. Bauer-Shaddock is an active member of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and Colorado Human Resource Association (CHRA).

Mr. Sam Jones, Director, IT Application Development

Mr. Sam Jones combined his technical skills as an analytical chemist and his knowledge of information technology systems as the Director of IT Applications Developement. He also oversees all other IT operations for Forensic Laboratories which include software/web development, EMR integration, and network/systems administration.


This group oversees a staff of approximately 100 full-time technicians and specialists who form the core of Forensic laboratories. All of these people are dedicated to the service of our clients.
